Hmmm, it's a tough issue ... here is a scenario: Let's take a regular Solaris administrator thats been doing his job for several years now (medium to large org)... looking after 5 x V880's running Oracle 9i on some EMC storage.
VAR: Solaris 10 GA !! OMG !! *gasp* ADMIN: Hmmm, send me some info on it. (receives a pdf of ALL the added features and advantages - very impressive ;) ADMIN: Oracle tells me that they don't have a version certified for it ... VAR: Hmm.. ok. Hack the installer or wait for the next 10G release. (waits) ADMIN: Ok, Oracle certified it. I've looked at the added features... but I'm not going to use Zones. Dtrace looks to difficult and ZFS isn't included in the release... and we use EMC's with Veritas. blah blah blah blah .... VAR: There has been a large increase in performance !! ADMIN: How much faster will it be ? VAR: Errr... (phones sun - "Errrr...") ADMIN: Nope ... I'm fine with Solaris 9. Sol 10 looks nice ... but I don't see it making my life easier right now. And the guy goes on with his life, save in the knowledge that his current servers will keep on ticking over like a pacemaker giving him more time to spend on Skype to convince fellow workers on the added advantages of running Ubuntu over Win XP.
