Rather than reinstalling for personal use, why not have a "pester" mode (not
excessive),
which (absent a paid license key) spits out a message at boot and at each
driver open
(but skipping the latter if the last such message was output within an hour)
saying

"OSS audio drivers licenced for personal use only. For license for other
use, updates,
     or support, contact ..."

IMO, that's enough of a encouragement for non-paying users to stay up-to-date
(since
the only thing they're any good for is finding bugs and whatever word-of-mouth
they
may provide to potential paying customers), and also enough that a business
wouldn't
want that splattered on their console windows or log files. And it's less
obnoxious than
update-or-lose-it.

Heck, I'll probably update anyway. As of a year or so ago, I seem to recall an
app or
two that didn't get along with it (I think it was insufficient compatibility
with the
usual Sun audio interface, but I wouldn't swear to that; whatever it was, it
was something
I'd run ok on SPARC before, but never on x86). Hopefully, whatever the problem
was
won't happen now. If only I could remember what that darn app was...
