You have never been able to access all files on UNIX directly...

If you specify a path name longer than PATH_MAX, it fails and the related 
filsystem objects are bejond your visibility scope. A solution is to chdir to a 
"place" in the FS where you may access the files inquestion.

The same appears to be true for XATTR files except that the reason why a file
is bejond your visibility scope is different.
