7000 packages is a big number. At the time of this writing the exact
count is 6495 but there's no question that we'll hit 7000 very soon,
most likely tomorrow. The distro package counter is updated in real time
on our homepage [1], along with the list [2] of latest added packages.
There are several ways to look on it. First that comes to mind: You want
it, we got it. In the super-wide range from the most popular OSS
apps/stacks/suites to the most arcane ones that nobody ever heard of -
we got it all!
There's also this simple empirical fact that the model *just works*. (If
it didn't we wouldn't be /here/ /now/) A few critical choices made about
a year ago proved to be the right ones..
At this point we certainly have achieved a full integration with
Ubuntu/Dapper Drake [3]. The Dapper, currently at its Beta to be
released in June 2006, is a major Ubuntu release that will be supported
for the next *5* years (more info on this can at [4]). It's a major
milestone in Linux world, and the fact that the same software is
simultaneously available on OpenSolaris cannot be underestimated..
How stable is all this OSS? In our experience, it's the same old 80/20
rule over and over again. Out of 100 automatically (see [5]) built
packages 80 just work without any problems whatsoever. And out of the
remaining 20 packages 80% can be fixed after the first run, the fix
being on-the-level-of-typo trivial. And only the remaining 4 to 6% of
the grand total require real development cycles.
We'll be providing an intermediate development ISO in a day or two from
today. This pre-release ISO will not be posted to mirrors. At least, not
yet. To get the latest Xorg 7.0.x, GNOME 2.14.x, KDE 3.5.2, Firefox
1.5.x, evolution 2.6.x, and the latest MySQL, Apache, and the thousands
more - write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] In response we'll provide a
private link to download directly from the gnusolaris.org on a single
condition. The condition is that you help us to fix any of the bugs
listed at [6], or any of the non-listed bugs you discover yourself. In
short, it is a simple barter, and developers are extremely welcome!
Other news and the latest developments are at [1]. In particular,
OpenOffice.org 2.0 was just built on NexentaOS. This absolutely
non-trivial piece of work - and the biggest so far contribution in the
NexentaOS lifetime - was done solely by Alberto Escudero Pascual.
