Alan Coopersmith announced [3] that builds 39 and 40 of the X server
consolidation
were now available. The most notable changes were the integration of the first
two modules from the X.Org modular releases. Build 39 also introduces 'xproto',
which contains the core X protocol and a number of headers, making it the first
step in replacing some of the still-closes portion of the sources.

Laura Ramsey forwarded on [4] details of the latest announcement from JavaOne
allowing communities to define packaging, installation and support for JDK
in their distribution. A community project on Java.net has been started [5]
to serve as a clearinghouse of information and best practices for delivering
compatibility packaged JDK bundles to GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris. Laura sent [6]
around details of what the OpenSolaris project was up to at JavaOne, and Jim
Grisanzio mailed [7] around some pictures of the events.

Best OpenSource Software in the CODIE awards [9].

giving a lot of talks around the world, this question had regularly come up without
a good answer.

Dan Price mailed [14] with some details of Google's new webtoolkit [15], wondering
whether OpenSolaris should start considering it as we start thinking about
complex sub applications in the website like SCM hosting, page editing, etc..

Thomas Stein asked [16] what the difference between XOrg and Xsun was. Alan

Glenn Weinberg mailed [18] with some clarification of where things were at with
the Solaris releases, mentioning that Sun's big ISVs were only just now starting
to deploy Solaris 10, and that he expected Solaris 11 to be out somewhere
between
2008 and 2010. Casper Dik followed up [19] with some explanation of the
evolution
of the Solaris releases, and the types of changes that had been made there.

Matthew Gardiner asked [20] if we would see some quality GUI based
administration
tools for ZFS, and some GNOME integration. Glynn Foster replied [21] that work

already started, and that some functionality to add ACL capabilities in the file
manager was already available in the latest Vermillion JDS builds.

Roman Bekker proposed [24] a new project to investigate the addition of having
/usr/ports on OpenSolaris, for easy automatic installation like the BSD
variants.

Alex Ross announced [25] that they had reached the 7000 package milestone for
NexentaOS, highlighting the model that they were using to 'just work'. Alex
expected that some betas based on Ubuntu Dapper would soon be available. In
combination, Alberto Escudero Pascual announced [26] that a native version
of OpenOffice.org 2.0 was available for NexentaOS, another significant milestone
for the project.
