Thank you for the reply,  this answers my question.  Now time to research the live upgrade.

BFU is a highly destructive upgrade - it destroys your ability
to do real upgrades that upgrade the entire OS instead of just
the tiny subset (ON) which BFU handles.   Live Upgrade or an
OS install upgrade are much much better for people who aren't
working directly on ON (and even for those who are in many cases).
