I do wish this was a possibility, we really havent been left with much of an
otion in the graphics market. In reality all we can choose between now is
ATI and NVidia. It appears that Nvidia is the closest friend OSS has amongst
the two (isnt that saying something).
I was personally waiting and hoping that the S3 Xabre or one of the
smaller companies would atleast opensource their specs are to allow
the talented OSS coders to impliment the drivers.
As for the graphics processor by SUN - there is nothing stopping them
really; and it would atleast provide economies of scale to reduce the
per-unit costs of their Majc processor.
Even if it only does 80% of what the top of the range Nvidia or ATI
card does, but sold at around US$120 per unit, the share volume would
make up for any lower margins.
