Thanks for this project proposal, Lucy. You have seconds. Eric will get
you set up.

The needs are accumulating for simplified Solaris device naming.
Name a few here:
- persistent storage device names across the enterprise.
e.g. consistent name for a SANed tape drive (RFE. 4096373).
- flexible network device names.
e.g. replacing /dev/bge0 with /dev/net/192.168.1.0 (ref. ClearView).
- portable system device names.
e.g. replacing /dev/dsk/c0tWWNd0s0 with /dev/sys/root (RFE. 6311403).
- automatic discovery of new device names, in the case of forgetting
the special "-r" flag in the boot command (ref. CR 5050715).
- flexible device access control for removable/hotpluggable devices,
e.g. enhanced logindevperm (ref. Tamarack).
- ability for the local zone admin to setup an anonymous FTP
environment (ref. Zones).
- a simple mechanism to support device virtualization (ref. Zones).
An internal project, called Devname (home page at http://devname.eng),
started to tackle these problems. The initial goal for the project is to
build
an infrastructure that can be utilized to solve the real problems listed
above, and it is nearing completion. But of course we still welcome
community
inputs, and going forward we've got some ideas on how to solve the real
problems, and would love to hear ideas from the community in this regard.
We propose to make Devname an OpenSolaris project.
Thanks,
Lucy
