Having to stare at /etc/path_to_inst to figure out how the devices map
to the hardware sounds like a defect rather than a feature to me.

That aside, it sounds like you have a lot of thoughts about how this
stuff ought to work.  Would it be possible to proceed with setting up
the new project, and then continue this detailed conversation on a new
mailing list for that project?  I'm not sure that plumbing the depths
of /dev is really on-topic for opensolaris-discuss.
