The only thing I see in this is that I don't quite agree with the argument that 
since the first thing they saw was text, that they weren't going to get 
graphics. It's been a little while, but isn't the first thing that Windows XP 
does is boot to a text mode environment and doesn't it do the first stage of 
installation in that enviornment as well?

I see lots of complaints from people about install processes for Linux, Solaris, BSD, 
etc. -- but not too many people that are willing to admit that the Windows install 
process isn't a very "aesthetic" experience either.

although windows installer is ugly, very few people actually use it,
almost all the desktop boxes have windows preinstalled; and even if
windows actually beraks beyond repair there is always a hiden
partition and a recovery cd to do the grunt work.
i personally dont see windows as an example for anything except maybe
usability but even there it is not the king of the hill, we have
apple. I like their IDEs though :)
