"The exact version of GCC to be bundled" is an exhausting topic.
We can decide on the final GCCfss/gcc version latter.
That's why the proposal is named "support GCCfss and gcc 4 in ON"

I believe that the set of changes we have for ON will be equally useful
for any gcc 4.x version. Both sparc and x86. That's the main point.
That's why this topic was started. Whatever version is chosen
this work would need to be done anyway.

So, can I get "+1" since that's what policy to start the project requires ?

After that the plan is:

 - introduce the current changes, get them reviewed and integrated
As I mentioned in the proposal they are mostly trivial, but massive.
I believe they don't disrupt the current gcc3 functionality and Studio
   support

 - at that point ON will be pretty stable built with gccfss on sparc
with studio backend and with RTL backend
. with gcc3.4.3-csl like changes any gcc 4.x will be able to build
     ON on x86 platform

 - verify that gcc3.4.3-csl like changes are still needed. if so,
we need a branch on gcc svn.
It seems that i386-pc-solaris target is not so good in 4.0 and 4.1
   and gets better in 4.2
So I guess it makes sense to branch of 4.2. At least 4.2 has an
option not to violate sparc abi when returning structs

 - file and fix bugs to make both sparc and x86 stable
We already have a list of pending bugs and hopefully ON community
   can help on that too.

Alex.
