This is whyt cdrecord allows you to do since a long time.
If you like to know it exactly: longer than cdrw exists....
This is why I cannot understand why people claim that they have problems
with cdrecord.
If you add the apropriate things to /etc/default/cdrecord
(there are ecen examples in the template), you may call:
cdrecord dev=sony foo.iso
