I refuse to learn vi on the basis that I don't see why there needs to be a learning curve associated with editing text files in text mode. Nano or pico will do nicely thank you.

Not surprising.  Replace the NP with nothing, so that root's
entry looks like this:

	root::6445::::::

BTW, you really ought to learn vi.  IMHO, it's an essential UNIX skill!
