Thanks stevel and bochnig but adding the environment variables didn't help as I still get the same errors.
Seanmcg, per your suggestion I was able to narrow it down to this line: > /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config --cflags -I/usr/local/mysql/include -xO3 -mt -D_FORTEC_ -xarch=v9 -xc99=none I have asked my SA to install CC but in the meantime is it possible to translate the above "--cflags" for cc to gcc so I can compile with GCC? Or does it mean that I cannot link MySQL (compiled with cc) with gcc?
