What did you edit when booting after the install ?. adding the install_media=cdrom,at... seems to cause the OS to try booting from the CDROM, which is not what we want to do

Quite true. I should have been clearer. I currently have:

kernel /platform/i86pc/multiboot -B install_media=cdrom,atapi-cd-dma- enabled=0
