The default /etc/security/crypt.conf always supports Linux MD5 passwords;
the only reason to change /etc/security/policy.conf is when:

        - you are using Linux MD5
        - you want to DISALLOW continued use of Linux MD5 for new passwords

In fact, from Solaris 9 update 2 and later onwards, not just S10.
