it looks like noabort does not take a value.  So I think the last of your three
examples is the correct one.

No idea why it isn't doing what you expect, and not enough functioning
brain cells at the moment to look closer.  (you did export UMEM_DEBUG,
right?)

Note that from the code, "noabort" is one of the options marked "Private";
as far as a bit of googling shows, at least that option isn't documented
(and without checking, I'm going to guess that none of the "Private" ones
necessarily are).  So the only documentation is the code itself, and only
if you're actually running the same version you're looking at can you have
some confidence that looking at it will do you any good.
