I don't see my original reply anywhere on the thread : http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=15193&tstart=0 So here it is again. It was sent out Fri, 6 Oct 2006 22:22:53 -0400 (EDT) which was minutes after the original. You are totally correct. Bang on target in fact. I guess thats a problem with open source projects that are community driven. A software title can fall through the cracks and be lost in there unless someone files an email that says "update this crusty bit!" > Something I would very much like to see (and I know others would as > well) is a BSD-like ports system geared towards a solaris environment. > As a long time BSD user, I am of course biased towards the FreeBSD > ports system and pkgsrc, but in all honesty, i find darwinports to be > far and above the best ports system available. You know what? Why not. I have become somewhat more reasonable since my birthday back in April and just gotten way more laid back about a whole pile of stuff. I know that I really lost my mind about a few things back then and hey, I do NOT apologize for my passion but I really need to have a look in the mirror and question my motives. I have to stick to my true feelings, if it will enrich the Solaris world then by all means lets do it. Let's work together. > I would like to propose a solaris based ports system based on the > darwinports system modified to support sun tools and packaging. You know, this sounds a lot like something that Laszlo Peter and I were talking about. About a month ago he had the idea that we could take a long hard look at the pkgsrc project and maybe build a whole tree of software. Wring out the bugs and see if it will fly ya know? So I grabbed a dual Opteron server and stuffed it into the rack here at Blastwave, handed him the root password and said "have fun and let us know if ya need anything!" So hey .. I am here staring at the rack right now, upgrading the RAM on a server for the Polaris project and I have to knock down the Blastwave site at the same time for about 15 minutes. Its a long story but essentially I don't have the Netra's all on rails and so I have to shut down the top three boxes, yank them out of the rack .. install the RAM and then put them all back in. So while I am here ... do you need a dual Opteron box to experiment with this? > I have a significant chunk of time I can donate to this project and I know > of others who are willing to participate as well. I have a significant chunk of resources that you can use for this if you want. I recented added a V120 into the rack and a IBM dual AMD 250 proc box as well as a no name brand ( Appro? ) dual Opteron here. They are meant for the community and thats you. The rest of the Blastwave gang have first dibs to everything and so they all have accounts. The Blastwave project is really focused on building software that will run on Solaris 8 and 9 and 10 and Solaris Express more or less. Well, Solaris 8 and 9 and 10 for sure and SX is pretty much going to work flawlessly but we can't put that in writing. :-) If you want to work on production Solaris 10 Update 2 gear that is fully patched and with Studio 8 and 10 and 11 and piles of NFS file space and snv_49 ( thats what I have here ) then let me know. The door is open and if a community guy needs resources and if I can help then I will. Just like that. No issues at all. Also, at this point Kieth W. may be rolling on the floor in fits trying to figure out where I am coming from and if I am in fact Dennis Clarke. Yeah man ... its me. I had to take a serious look at the recent past and realize that this is a "community" project and I have to help or get out of the way.
