actually that is a bit deeper than ntohl(), htonl(),... data are stored in application-specific compressed format with a built-in data dictionary for encoding and decoding. Data files are shared (via SAN) among multiple machines (mix of Lintel/LinAMD and Sun), so the endian issue needs to be considered from day one.
