Folks, As some might notice for some time I was looking for any info on Solaris AHCI driver, and I feel like sharing my experience with the rest of the community.
Historic background: AHCI driver covered by PSARC 2006/384 [1] and CRs 6261241 [2] and 6418168 [3] After asking multiple times on osol-discuss [4], arc-discuss [5] and sending some personal emails I am exactly where I started - nobody talks about it. There are a number of explanations for these interesting results. 1. The project is highly confidential and people's lips are sealed. That is quite unlikely, since the spec is public and PSARC case was published to os.org in a matter of hours after I asked. (Thanks, John!) 2. The people running this project are not aware of opensolaris, and other people who knows them (AHCI developers) are not aware of opensolaris either. So nobody can tell them what's going on. That also sounds quite unlikely. 3. The project is dead, the people working on it are RIFed. The other people who knew them also RIFed, so nobody can tell the story. Although there are some signs that RIF axe touched AHCI team, I find it hard to believe the project can just go away like that, leaving no trails. 4. I am on every one's kill-file, so no one actually saw my mails :-P Well, that would be funny. So, what went wrong in the process ? Is that lack of communication a designed feature or a bug ? Actually in any case we (community) should deal with that. 'cause such an unpleasant experience can drive people off the OpenSolaris project. And we just cannot allow things like that to happen. I think that the only way to shake the system now is to start an OpenSolaris AHCI project (I know I'll get seconds). Any other ideas ?
