If you add this please consider two three options here:
1. Conversion to the system's default locale (this should be the
default)
2. Conversion to UTF-8
3. Conversion to a defined encoding (encoding=<encodingidetifer>)

IMO all three options are needed to cover the various *.gov.*
requirements or "preferences" (e.g. GB18030 support or things like
ja_JP.PCK&co.).

BTW: It may be nice to have an option to cache media in a special
"cachefile" which gets flushed at "sync" or unmount time (which may be
usefull or USB sticks and floppy media).
