But if you need your archiver and compressor to work reliably across a multitude of systems, such as BSD, HP-UX, IRIX, AIX and Solaris, to name a few, "-z" will terribly fail. On the other hand, the "mouthful" comes from understading the principles of portability, something that the GNU world has yet to reach.
