I have no less than seven of them. They are exceptional little boxes.

Let me do a count ... yep .. eight of them if we count the two on the
floor doing nothing at the moment.

You can install a QFE card although a simple SunSwift PCI option is even
better because you get another SCSI controller. There is an internal IDE
controller for the CDROM which you may have a hard time getting. That IDE
controller allows you to hang an IDE cable out the front of it and then
you can attach a DVD player/burner if you want. Depends on how experimental
you are.

There is a downside to these boxes. The Netra T1 AC105 is EOL telco grade
gear and the memory options for it *may* be excessively expensive.

I actually have a 512MB Memory kit here in my desk drawer. Let me fish it
out and read the part number. Its says 501-5389 on a orange sticker on one
side and Cellestica Canada on the other. In fact, I have been in the
Cellestica Canada plant on Don Mills Road in Toronto and its a place so grim
and grey that you just want to slit your wrists rather than be in there.
That's another story from my OS/2 and token ring days. :-)

That memory is option X6986A or FRU part 501-5389. If you check on
SunSolve you will see this is memory also used in the Sun big-iron 12K and
15K servers.

Now if you look on eBay you will see people selling it for anywhere from $50
up to $500. Wide range. Why? Because I have found this memory to be
somewhat more fragile that ordinary DIMMS. When people remove them they
tend to flex the whole mezzanine board and you can get some bad memory that
way. I know that I have and its real frustrating. Buy the real genuine
Sun memory and make sure that you have a return policy in place. Even if
the systems diags post says its good .. it may not be. Tough luck eh?

Also .. the mounting screws for the memory is rarely included and you also
need the little plastic insulators for the boards if you stack two of them
to get 1GB of RAM. I certainly have and these boxes will run beautifully
with 1GB of RAM and dual 72GB SCSI disks.[1]

So this is a long response and thats because I know the real value of these
Netra T1 AC105 telco grade boxes. The 440MHz unit is worth its weight in
gold because it will never ever never fail. Got that? Tough as hardened
steel they are I tell you. Get two. Get five. Run them and smile. I have
put them through sheer hell[2] and they never fail. Even when the AC fails
and you need to run on UPS battery power they will keep going at 50C !

Last warning .. ensure that you flash the PROM up to the latest patch level
otherwise you can lose access to the second hme network port. Its well
known and easy to remedy. Get patch 108673-02 for sure.

anything else I can think of? Oh yeah .. these things are cheap on eBay
becuase most people don't know what they are *really* worth.

oops .. too late now eh ?

Dennis

[1] I have one running with three SCSI ports and 8x73GB of storage on it.
    Rock solid.

[2] I have am experimental unit running Solaris 10 Update 2 with only 64MB
of memory in it just to force severe memory pressure on the system.
