This would make financial contributions from other entities much easier. It would additionally help to clear the concerns that OpenSolaris is still "controlled" by Sun. Right now, Sun could (theoretically) pull the cord on the project, and although the code would still be out there, it would have nowhere to go, unless another community member picked it up.
