However that is NOT how you are presenting this project, it is being
presented as having the ability to install an OpenSolaris distro into
a DOS/Windows fdisk partition.
No, not the least. It is "called" a DOS/Windows extended partition,
because thats what it is called. It refers to the partition ID. Thats
what I sent in the follow up mail. That speaks nothing of a windows/dos
partition.
Well, talking about windows/dos partitions, what is it that makes it a
windows/dos partition? Mostly, the filesystem, right?. That was never in
the proposal.
Which is why I'm asking the questions! The original proposal wasn't
clear enough for me to believe the project was heading in what I think
is thec
BTW, the extended partition could be thought of as a
container which has its own ID - the one that is referred as the
Windows/DOS "extended" partition and within it, you could have the
pan-galactic-gargle-blaster partition, and hence all the discussion
about russian dolls and more.
Again the original partition was sufficiently vague that I didn't know
what type of partition you were talking about.
I disagree, if that were actually true there would be only two types
of partition "primary" and "extended" that isn't the case there are
many many tags for partitions. Linux would not have needed a "Linux
extended" partition type that is different to the "DOS/Windows" or
"Windows 95" ones.
correct, since an extended partition is also a primary partition. Sorry,
but thats how it is. Try running the linux fdisk and check out what it
asks for when in starts partitioning.
I know the UI you are talking about but just because it is in the fdisk
program used by some distribution running a Linux kernel doesn't make it
right or correct or authoritative.
So why is it okay to install into the partitions "called" DOS/Window but
not the Linux extended one ?
The very fact you talk about logical drives rather than about putting
a VTOC in place and defining slices betrays this as DOS/Windows
functionality.
Disagree. It doesn't. Answered above. You put the VTOC within the
solaris partition contained within the extended partition.
Is this what the project is actually proposing is done ? If so I think
I can agree to that being acceptable. It really was not clear form the
original proposal hence all my questions.
