The real answer is that you were probably hitting:
6479836 sparc assembler and gcc don't get along anymore
Which was fixed in snv_54. Though that's only if you
recompiled them on 54 and they then worked - if the binaries
you built on 53 just started working on 54 then that's
probably not it.
