Hi Everyone,

Normally I try to stay out of such politics, but I have to put my $0.02 in:)

Hopefully, OpenSolaris will not fall under any GPL license. The CDDL works
well. Point in fact look at how features (Dtrace and ZFS) from OpenSolaris are
being ported to the BSD's and finally to MacOS X (which some would argue is the
largest consumer base market for a Unix). If there was something wrong with
this model, then how could such ports work? What value would it bring to have
OpenSolaris licensed under GPL (regardless of the version)? What is the aim of
such changes? Obviously one can port features and contribute already. If the
goal is to build a bridge to Linux, one would have to question the thinking
there. Where would that lead us? By differentiating OpenSolaris we provide an
OS that stands out the way MacOS X stands out from Windows or Linux.

The real question is how can we provide value and functionality in OpenSolaris
to stand out from the other OS's?

Perhaps some people are too caught up in the "open source = GPL" thinking?
Which is unfortunate. We should address this in some manner, but changing
licensing won't do the trick. We really have to identify what will drive
developer and user interest. Is it a matter of approachability, installation,
bundled software, etc?

These are hard questions, but they really should be asked and addressed before
doing something drastic like changing the licensing of the OS itself.
