I received a free OpenSolaris Starter Kit from Sun at a conference they held in Atlanta. I subsequently went to the OpenSolaris site assuming I would find instructions on how to install Solaris Express Community Edition.
Someone goofed. Amidst all the excellent material presented on the site, the one thing I could not find is how to install the OS. I know it must be there somewhere, but to bury the information, which seems to me to be easily the first thing which a viewer should see, is not the way to interest new users and developers in the OS. Maybe members of the community should rethink the site design. Nonetheless I am still looking for documentation on how to install OpenSolaris Community Edition. Since I have multiple OSs installed on my computer I need to make the disk space and partitions available in which to install OpenSolaris Community Edition in order to run it. I know how to do this for my computer and since I have System Commander as my multi-boot I have no doubt I can also boot OpenSolaris Community Edition once I install it. So my question is: which partition(s) types does OpenSolaris Community Edition need or allow ? Can I install into a small boot partition which is not the MBR ? Can I specify a separate root and home partitions ala Linux ? What partition type(s) does OpenSolaris Community Edition use ? Can OpenSolaris Community Edition read and write to Linux ext3 partitions ? Can OpenSolaris Community Edition read from NTFS partitions ? Is there any documentation anywhere on the web, hopefully on the OpenSolaris site somewhere, which gives this information ? _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
