 While this
used to be a big no-no, I was told it is OK after Solaris 10. Is
this advice correct? Thanks.

It was actually OK before Solaris 10. If the system can't exec root's
shell, it automatically falls back to /sbin/sh.

Since I was installing a new Sparc system with B56, I tried this.
On purpose, really :-)

I put an entry in /etc/passwd for root's shell to be /bin/kshh
(note the misspelling) and logged out. And I couldn't log back
in - login reported "no shell" and gave me another login prompt.

I *was* able to login as myself and su, so all was not lost. (I
did have another root login window sitting there just in case.)

So, bottom line, it still is not quite safe to screw up your root
account :-)
