The /etc/release file does not get updated.

Here is a machine that was installed back in 2001 ( I think ) :

jupiter console login: root
Password:
Feb 7 01:51:52 jupiter login: ROOT LOGIN /dev/console
Last login: Tue Jan 30 14:34:54 on console
Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.8 Generic February 2000
You have new mail.
# uname -a
SunOS jupiter 5.8 Generic_117350-29 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise
# cat /etc/release
                           Solaris 8 s28_38shwp2 SPARC
Copyright 2000 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
                            Assembled 21 January 2000
Solaris 8 Maintenance Update 6 applied
# exit

jupiter console login:

Any patch that I ever apply will not adjust that file. Once upon a time we
have this big monstroud things called Maintainance Updates but they no
longer exist. The only way to really gat all the features of the latest
release is to actually upgrade from the installation media.

I don't know if this helps .. but at least I'll try.

Dennis
