My understanding is that they are happy to gateway specific lists that people ask for. They were unenthusiastic about gatewaying "all the OpenSolaris lists" because of the sheer number.
That seems OK to me, since requests should only come from the mailing-list owner(s) themselves anyway. And _that_ suggests an as-yet untried setup: In theory, the leader(s) and participants of a new project could request of (stipulate to?) opensolaris.org administration that their new project's Mailman list _not_ have a Jive component, citing Jives foibles, etc.; choosing instead to get Jive-like functionality from an alternative such as Gmane. That would create a new problem to solve though as those lists would not, by default, show up on the opensolaris.org discussion index page...
