What would be nice is a mini-cd iso or similar which would boot the machine
with a network connection and download the rest of the required packages via
http/https/ftp.

Going DVD-only would require that anyone who has an interest
in SX:CE to have a dvd burner to burn the dvd image to disc.

I suggest making a minimal/bootstrap cd iso
image available to download so that you could use it to
install the bulk of solaris over a network (say, from a loopback
mounted dvd image over nfs ...I'm assuming there's a way to
tell the install program to load files from an nfs mount? Googling
hasn't given me a clear answer on that).

My first choice would be to keep the cd-install isos available, but
if that's already been decided against; I'd request making a
small bootstrap iso available to download along with the dvd image.
