yes, i tried it three times on my pentium-m laptop.  all three times it broke i 
didn't have any network interface plumbed-- i thought it might be network 
related.  my /etc/hosts file looked like this:

::1    localhost   loghost
127.0.0.1    localhost    loghost    desiderata

i just tried it after having my wireless connection plumbed and it didn't 
crash, but it gave an error Server Not Running, saying that there wasn't a 
server running on my machine.  i tried the hostname and localhost and neither 
worked-- said there wasn't a server.

i tried unplumbing the interface and running smc to see if it would hang again, 
but it worked.  i'm going to remove the /etc/hostname.iwi0 and /etc/dhcp.iwi0 
files and reboot and see if it hangs the machine again.
