This is something that sgi's `inst` excells at. It's a really 
ahead-of-its-time, elegant software management system that makes RPM, `apt-get` 
and especially system V packages look like toys in comparison.

Oh, and sgi built `inst` to understand System V packages. Installing the System 
V packaging eoe gives one `pkgadd` and friends... and they understand `inst` as 
well.

The only thing that comes close to `inst` is hp's `swinstall`.  It's almost as 
intelligent and as elegant, just somewhat slower. HP did a very good job there, 
I have to say. Kudos to IRIX and HP-UX engineers.
