Then here's the clarification:
Patches delivered by Sun may at times contain new features. This is
simply an unavoidable consequence of (a) the way patches are
generated and (b) the way releases are managed and marketed. It has
been this way for many years. All patches from Sun include precise
information about contents.
I seriously doubt that this helps anyone in the community, though.
There are *NO* OpenSolaris patches. There are *NO* patches for a
release under development. Sun's patch generation policy -- and
decisions about which things get backported to previous releases (and
thus issued as patches) -- has *nothing* to do with the content
choices made by any other distribution.
It does help, a lot. Please remember that it's not only about (Open)Solaris,
it's also about software for Solaris being delivered cleanly and properly.
And that includes packaging and maintaining 3rd party software for Solaris
by 3rd party developers.
For example, I've been churning over delivering just patches as
fixes/overlays on top of my own packages for Solaris -- it's not about
patching the OS, it's about patching 3rd party software here.
And to deliver software correctly, one must understand how things are
packaged and why. One must understand when to deliver a new package
revision, and when to patch; what should be delivered as a patch, and what
as a new package. After all those are architectural decisions. It's not
always about the operating system -- an operating system, however advanced
he might be, is useless without software, and software that "just works".
In short, patching's just out of scope here. A better place to
discuss this would be install-discuss. That's where the patching and
packaging tools (and policies regarding them) now live.
I was just replying to a thread; I don't feel that it's my place to play
moderator. Nor do I think it matters in the grand scheme of things.
