I don't think the old build 41 is the issue; console_putc is static in the 
current source just
as it is in build 41.

And I've got a reasonably recent cdrecord and scgcheck binary (from blastwave, 
of course).
In fact, I even get results similar to what you show.  But libscg can use USCSI 
if the
scg driver is not available (which is what it's doing in your example, too).  
That works...mostly,
but I'm trying to determine whether a new burner* is quirky or not, and I think 
I'd trust the
scg driver over USCSI for that.
