The point is, that if you're maintaining your own stack, you don't
need to "integrate" with the base OS's packaging system. In fact, you
usually don't want to mess with or touch the base stack at all!
Similar to how blastwave works actually, and why it works relatively
well...

I disagree. I take the exact opposite approach, full integration with the OS the way the OS vendor would do it.

But because of that, I'm able to commoditize the hardware and the OS. Servers and OS become off of the shelf components, and the software installed just works out of the box. And when/if the vendor comes up with their own version of the software, we don't have a problem, and I automatically benefit from their enhancements.

Plus, the biggest bonus is, everything works out of the box and there are no nasty surprises, something I've learned to appreciate at 03:07 in the morning, after a major outage.
