It's a bit confusing, but here is the gist of it: Solaris is a Sun product, and 
OpenSolaris is the open source project that Solaris draws from.  

Solaris Express Developer Edition is just a semi-tested build of OpenSolaris 
that is released every 3 months.  The Community Edition is a bi-weekly release 
of OpenSolaris.

Just boot off an OpenSolaris livecd, or try an OpenSolaris vmware guest image, 
and you will be able to see if it is the OS for you.

Frankly though, for a Windows desktop-replacement, I think most would suggest a 
good Linux distro over OpenSolaris.  The larger support community and better 
hardware support makes it a no-brainer for me.
