This is one of the most common questions on comp.unix.solaris USENET
forum as well.
It is really because Solaris is more Server-Centric than Linux is .
I agree that all other Unix:es leaves it up to the sysadmin to decide
for himself
which mountpoint to use for NFS mounted Homedirectories. However the
enforced
standard to use /home makes it easier in large installations.
I think that a more enlightening informational messages should be put
into useradd(1m)
if the adminguy tries to allocate homedirectories under /home. Maybe:
" Note that /home is owned by the Automonter, and local homedirectories
are supposed
to live under /export/home . Please read the automount manual page."
This sort of info would give people a better chance to quickly grasp the
idea , than
just an error msg. about "operation not applicable " which is true but not
sufficiently informational about why.
This would save a lot of frustration for linux admins who KNOW how to
install a user.
