Not sure if it's related, but I was getting a similar-sounding error message
trying to launch sunstudio on a fresh b59 install. I was able to get around
it by starting up the X font server on the box, e.g.:

svcadm enable x11/xfs
xset +fp tcp/localhost:7100

Yes.  This is CR 6534687.  It's pretty brutal, and seems to be a
problem with the way fonts are searched.  (Wildcards that are "too
wild" find nothing, while restricted subsets find usable fonts.)

It seems to be somewhat better in b61 and above; not sure what the
real fix or bug is, though.
