true, but how do you do that between a Mac and a Solaris box? Any quick 
pointers?

Configuring IPsec on MacOS is much easier if you use the freely available IPsecuritas program.

IPsec works just fine between MacOS and Solaris, just make sure you pick the same cipher suites etc.

For configuring IPsec on Solaris see the administration guide on docs.sun.com and if you have any problems try security-discuss alias on opensolaris.org.
