Oh, it's a good tar, don't get me wrong :)

However, the measure of its successful integration into {Open,}Solaris
will be most users will not notice that it's there, except that the
number of "tar on Solaris sucks" reports over time will approach zero.

Forcing those users who currently use SAM to retrain their fingers (and
rewrite any scripts or cluster configurations to prefix everything with
"sam " or whatever) for a large number of commands (where large > 1)
just so that you can retain what is essentially a vanity name on star
seems a little lopsided.
