When I want to write a portable script that works correctly on Solaris and Linux, I get stuck because even if I ask for sh, I get bash, which is not completely upwards compatible (especially for background job control). I end up requesting ksh because I don't get something else when I ask for it.

The message got warped on both sides of the fence, so it seems. The linux users thread I've been watching has taken the position that if Solaris wants to be more Linux like, they should jettison Solaris and just make their own Linux distro. Then they went on bashing Solaris because of the Motif windows (ala CDE). So, this message was taken badly by pretty much everybody. Personally, I like where OpenSolaris was heading, but it just can't get there fast enough (IMHO) to satisfy anyone. Education is truely the key, but it won't help if it falls on deaf ears.
