You may want to check into the lessons learned by the PowerPC port project.
This project has moved almost entirely inside the Sun firewalls and lives at
Sun Laboratories. There are maybe five people in the world that can craft
the virtual memory manager needed and you won't likely find them working for
free.  There have been no code releases recently and Sun Legal sits on top
of everything before it goes out the door.

It has been an educational experience to say the least.
