I think I like it better than two different distros, because it
pushes the choice down to the lowest level, without requiring
two different installations.

OTOH, two different distros in the sense of Solaris and SXDE say,
makes sense because they serve two different purposes in terms of
their life cycle.

So I think I'd like to see a universe-like concept introduced and
work its way down.

Only if one presumes a need for an environment with substantially
different rules as to what is and isn't stable/committed does one
IMO need yet another distro.

Given the option of creative solutions (universe, branded zones, or
whatever), is there any real need for a _supported_ permissive distro?
And wouldn't the costs of supporting such a distro (at anything
approaching the same level) be much higher?
