Unless the man page for the utility explicitly lists the behaviour in question, it is undesireable in my view. Even then, I have misgivings about it.
It is current practise in lots of utilities without a notice in a man page. So no difference to the sitiation today.
You also assume that I keep scripts around. I don't.
