Back then, we didn't have the luxury of a live CD. You booted the Solaris 
install CD in single user mode (which took a while, so you grabbed something to 
drink, like coffee), then mounted the root disk(s) under /a, then went medieval 
on the thing with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch. Ah, nothing quite like 
getting one's "fingers burned" and going through the experience.
Things sure have changed for the better in that respect.
