I would recommend OpenSolaris, not becouse I have *sun.com mail address.
(I was a linux fan once, since I learned few things about solaris)
The reasons, why you should give a try to OpenSolaris for a home server:
1. ZFS - try it out for home server, this filesystem fits great up
there and loves cheap disks!
1a) really easy to administrate
1b) if you will be running out of space, no problem, just attache
another hard drive
1c) each user can have own filesystem without big effort
1d) try to put 2 hard drives, if one fails another is up and running,
so no data lose!
1e) ... much more and much easier :)
2. Zones - imagine few services like ftp, web server, svn, and more in
one computer, but like in few ones. Just few commands and it's done. Why?:
2a) Security - it's much safer (I don't know if you are familiar with
linux jail - quite similar)
2b) Much, much easier to administrate than jails...
2c) You can use ZFS to clone and backup zones in miliseconds!
2d) You can run CentOS inside Solaris if you want to try it ;-)
2e) ... again much more and much easier :)
3. If you want to have Apache web server + MySql + Php there is Solaris
+ AMP[0] stack which allows to set up very nice box with those apps :-)
4. Now the question, what do you want on it to be running? For what
purpose (file sharing, desktops for clients, web server). OpenSolaris
fit's perfectly up there :)
