You might want to read up on ZFS. Then you'll believe it.

Linux can achieve the above with four commands.

Solaris can do it with 1 command, I believe.

What you have described is adding a disk to a zpool. I'm not sure what your confusion might have been in regard to non-standard vocabulary.

Maybe I'm mis-understanding you.
