That's almost identical to what ZFS does.

Yes, you can "expand" a SVM RAID5 volume, but the resulting metadevice is no 
longer RAID5.  That's why the description describes it as only a short-term 
solution.  

It would be far easier to get ZFS raidz vdevs to be expanded than for an SVM 
Raid5 metadevice to be expanded as a real raid5 device.
